Winter
Getting your car ready for winter: the complete detailing guide
In short: before winter, wash and decontaminate the paint, apply durable protection (sealant or ceramic coating), protect the wheels, treat the glass with a rain repellent and waterproof the fabrics. During winter, rinse often and use an alkaline prewash like Labocosmetica PRIMUS 2.0 to dissolve salt and traffic film.
Why winter is so hard on a car
In Quebec and other snowy regions, a car spends five months in a mix of road salt, grit, slush and water that freezes and thaws. Salt speeds up corrosion, grit scratches the paint at the slightest rub, and gray traffic film sticks to the bodywork. Protected paint is much easier to clean: dirt sticks less, and a simple rinse removes a good part of it.
The checklist before the first snowfall
1. A full wash
Start with the wheels using Maniac Line WHEEL & TIRE CLEANER, then a foam prewash with NEVE 2.0 and a two-bucket wash with SEMPER and a microfiber wash mitt.
2. Decontamination
Protection bonds better and lasts longer on perfectly clean paint. Use SIDERO for iron, then the clay bar with LUBRIFICA. See our guide: decontaminating your paint step by step.
3. Durable paint protection
This is the most important step. Depending on your budget and time:
| Option | Approximate durability | Application time |
|---|---|---|
| Quick sealant on a wet car: BENEFICIA or Maniac Line WET COAT | A few weeks | 10 minutes |
| Nano-composite sealant: CUPIDO | A few months | 1 to 2 hours |
| Ceramic coating: HPC 2.0 | Several years with proper maintenance | One day (including prep) |
Apply your protection when it's at least 10 °C (50 °F) and the car can stay dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer: by November, it's often too late for a ceramic coating outdoors.
4. Wheels
Brake dust mixed with salt bakes on fast. Clean the wheels thoroughly with Solutionist MULTI-FER and a wheel brush, then apply protection: a sealant like CUPIDO will make cleaning easier all winter. If you're putting on winter tires, it's the perfect time to clean the inside of the wheels too.
5. Glass: a rain-repellent treatment
A hydrophobic treatment makes rain and slush bead off, and ice sticks less to the windshield. Clean the glass with NITIDO, then apply AQUAVELOX (long-lasting) or Maniac Line RAIN SPEED (faster to apply).
6. Interior: fabrics and carpets
Boots bring salt and water inside. Waterproof fabrics and carpets with MaFra IDROSTOP: liquids bead up instead of soaking in, and salt stains come out more easily. Rubber floor mats on top are also a great idea.
7. Plastics and seals
A protectant like Maniac Line ALL ROUND PLASTIC PROTECTANT or HYDRA nourishes exterior plastics and rubber, which dry out and turn white from salt.
How to wash your car during winter
- Take advantage of milder days (above 0 °C / 32 °F) to wash, ideally indoors or at a hand car wash.
- Rinse thoroughly, including the wheel wells and underbody, where salt builds up.
- Apply an alkaline prewash like PRIMUS 2.0 or Maniac Line FOAM GUN PREWASH, let it dwell without drying, then rinse: it dissolves traffic film without rubbing.
- Wash with a mitt using the two-bucket method. Grit is very abrasive: rinse your mitt often.
- Dry well, especially door seals and locks, so they don't freeze.
No access to water? A rinseless wash with IDROSAVE can be done in a garage with a single bucket. If white marks remain after washing, they're mineral deposits: an acidic shampoo like PURIFICA removes them. For salt stains on carpets, see our guide removing road salt.
Winter mistakes to avoid
- Removing snow or ice with a stiff brush on the paint: use a soft brush and never scrape the bodywork.
- Washing in extreme cold: water freezes in locks, seals and on the paint.
- Waiting until spring to wash: salt works all winter long. A rinse every two weeks makes a real difference.
- Pouring hot water on a frozen windshield: it can crack.
What about spring?
As soon as the streets are clean, do a full decontamination to remove winter residue, clean the carpets and fabrics, and reapply your protection if needed.

Frequently asked questions
When should you apply protection before winter?
Ideally in October, while it's still at least 10 °C (50 °F) and the car can stay dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer. In November it's often too cold and damp to apply a ceramic coating outdoors; a quick sealant like BENEFICIA, which goes on a wet car, is then a good option.
Is it a good idea to wash your car in winter?
Yes. Road salt works all winter long: waiting until spring gives corrosion and grime time to set in. Take advantage of days above freezing to rinse the car, ideally every two weeks, focusing on the wheel wells and the underbody.
Ceramic or sealant to get through winter?
A ceramic coating like HPC 2.0 protects for several winters but takes a full day of prep. A sealant like CUPIDO goes on in one or two hours and lasts several months. Both make salt much easier to rinse off. See our guide applying a ceramic coating yourself.
Should you also protect the interior for winter?
Yes: boots bring salty water onto the carpets. A fabric waterproofing spray like MaFra IDROSTOP makes liquids bead up, and rubber mats over the original floor mats hold the slush.
Is a rain repellent useful in winter?
Yes. Rain and slush bead up and ice sticks less to the windshield. First clean the glass with NITIDO, then apply AQUAVELOX or Maniac Line RAIN SPEED, preferably before the first snowfall.
