Washing your car without scratches: prewash and the two-bucket method

Prélavage à la mousse Labocosmetica NEVE 2.0 sur une voiture

In short: to wash without scratching, you need to remove as much dirt as possible before touching the paint. Clean the wheels first, do a foam prewash with NEVE 2.0, rinse, then wash with the two-bucket method (shampoo + clean water, each with a GRIT SAFE grit guard) and a microfiber wash mitt. Dry by dragging a soft towel, without rubbing.

Where do micro-scratches come from?

The fine circular scratches you see in the sun ("swirls") are caused by grains of sand or grit dragged across the paint: by a sponge, a car wash brush, a poorly rinsed mitt or a rough towel. The right washing method prevents most of these defects, which can only be removed afterward by polishing.

What you need

Step by step

1. Choose the right time

Wash in the shade, on a cool surface: early in the morning or late in the day. In the sun, water and soap dry too quickly and leave water spots.

2. Wheels and tires first

They are the dirtiest parts. Spray the cleaner on cool wheels, let it dwell, brush, then rinse. Doing them first keeps you from splashing an already clean body. Use tools reserved for wheels, never your paint mitt.

3. The foam prewash

Rinse the car, then cover it with foam from the bottom up. Let it dwell a few minutes without drying: the foam softens and carries away dirt. Rinse from the top down. You've just removed a large part of the dirt without any contact.

4. The two-bucket method

  1. Bucket #1: water + shampoo. Bucket #2: clean water. A GRIT SAFE grit guard at the bottom of each keeps sand away from the mitt.
  2. Dip the mitt in the shampoo and wash one panel at a time, from top to bottom, in straight lines and without pressing.
  3. Before reloading with soap, rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket by rubbing it on the grit guard.
  4. Save the rocker panels and bumpers for last, as they are the dirtiest areas. If needed, use a second mitt for these areas.

5. Rinsing

Rinse thoroughly from top to bottom. Tip: remove the nozzle and let the water sheet over the bodywork; it will carry away much of the water and make drying easier.

6. Streak-free drying

Spray a finishing product like PERFECTA SiO2 on the wet paint: it reduces friction and adds protection. Lay the towel flat and gently pull it toward you, without rubbing. Finish the mirrors, handles and seals with a smaller microfiber towel.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Dish soap: it strips protection and dries out plastics.
  • Sponges: they trap sand on their surface and drag it across the paint.
  • A single bucket: you put dirt back on the car every time you dip.
  • Circular motions: in straight lines, any scratch is much less visible.
  • Picking up a mitt that fell on the ground: it must be washed before touching the paint again.
  • Automatic car washes with brushes: they're fast, but they're a major cause of micro-scratches.

Between washes?

For light dust or fingerprints, a quick detailer like Maniac Line EXTERIOR QUICK DETAILER and a clean microfiber towel are enough. Without access to water, a rinseless wash with IDROSAVE is an excellent solution. Also remember to wash your microfiber towels properly with MaFra MICROFIBER WASH, without fabric softener.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you wash your car?

For a daily driver, a wash every one to two weeks keeps dirt from bonding. In winter, rinse at least every two weeks to remove salt, on a day above freezing.

Can you wash your car with dish soap?

No. Dish soap is a degreaser: it strips waxes and sealants and dries out plastics and rubber. Use a pH-neutral car shampoo like SEMPER.

Do you really need a pressure washer to wash your car properly?

No. A sprayer prewash like INITIO, a garden hose and the two-bucket method give excellent results. Without access to water, a rinseless wash with IDROSAVE is also a good solution.

Do automatic car washes damage the paint?

Car washes with rollers or brushes are a major cause of swirl marks and holograms. Touchless car washes are less risky for the paint, but clean less thoroughly and often use harsher chemicals for protections.

How should you wash microfiber towels?

In lukewarm water, separately from other laundry, with a microfiber detergent like MaFra MICROFIBER WASH and no fabric softener, which clogs the fibers. Dry on low heat or air-dry.
